Hawaii where to relax. Charming Hawaiian beaches. Battleship Arizona Memorial

Tired of gray days? Turkey and Thailand seem "hackneyed" and banal to you? Well then Aloha! Welcome to Hawaii! By the way, did you know that this word means not only a greeting, but also "goodbye", "friendship" and "love"? In our virtual tour, we will look at everything that is useful for a traveler to know before a trip. Maui is one of the most popular islands in the archipelago and the third largest. The Internet element, relying on the assessments of travel journalists and reviews of tourists, recognized him as the leader in the ranking of the most visited and interesting places on the planet. Staying in this heavenly place is worth the money and time spent. How can a Russian tourist get to the island of Maui? And what awaits him there? Let's find out together!

Hawaiian Islands: geographical educational program

Location: Northern Hemisphere, Central Pacific. Exact coordinates will not be needed, unless, of course, you are an airliner pilot. The archipelago of the Hawaiian Islands is territorially part of the United States of America. This is the longest chain of islands on the whole Earth, with an area of about 2.5 thousand km 2. In addition, the Hawaiian archipelago is the most remote inhabited place on the planet. Think about it: the distance to the United States is almost 4 thousand km, to Japan - twice as much. The official language is English, but the population also speaks local dialects (Hawaiian, Polynesian and others).

The fiftieth US state of Hawaii is a region with a high population density. More than 1.3 million people live here. The area of these Pacific islands is constantly increasing for natural reasons - due to volcanic eruptions. That is why in Hawaii you can find beaches of unusual shades: red, black, brown and even green, which attract tourists so much.

More than two million people visit here every year. The most visited cities by tourists are Hilo and Kailua-Kona. In order not to get confused between the names of the archipelago and the largest of its islands, the Americans call the latter "The Big Island" (The Big Island). The state capital is Honolulu, the international airport of which most international flights arrive. In total, the state has four districts (the islands of Hawaii and Maui, Kauai and the capital).

The nature of the "island of flowers"

Hawaii is almost entirely composed of volcanic rock. The surface of the islands is only a small part of the mountains, the main part of which is hidden in the depths of the ocean. Some volcanoes are over 70 million years old.

Rare islands of the Pacific Ocean can boast such a variety of tropical vegetation, exotic flowers with beautiful names. Orchids, plumeria, silver swords grow in numerous gardens, and the yellow Hawaiian hibiscus (sometimes red) is considered a national symbol. On the islands you can see huge pineapple plantations. However, at present, these delicious fruits are not exported, the main source of income for the state is tourism. Hawaii is the only place in America where coffee is grown.

There are much more animals, especially marine ones, than birds. Many species of birds have become extinct due to the disappearance or significant change in their range. To blame for this, of course, man and ... mongooses. Environmentalists are sounding the alarm because of the massive deforestation on the islands.

Animals are presented in all their diversity. Only in Hawaii you can find the green monk seal and about 1500 species of other endemics found only in this place.

US visa and air travel options

In addition to allowing entry into the country and paying a consular fee ($160), Russian tourists will need to pass an interview. When traveling independently, you need to pay a fee before submitting the necessary documents for processing a visa at the consulate. Then wait (usually by e-mail) for an identification code. He is informed at the interview, for which you must first sign up on the website of the US Diplomatic Mission in Russia. You can communicate with the representative of the states at the Consulates General, which are in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and Yekaterinburg. If you buy a ready-made tour to Hawaii, almost all the work will be done by the agency. The only thing required is your personal presence at the interview.

Most often, Russian tourists choose an air flight from Moscow to Honolulu, and then from the capital of the archipelago they fly to the island of interest, for example, Maui. You can fly to California or Seattle, from whose airports you can get to cities such as Kahulue, Hilo and Kona.

Hawaii tour operators

At present, with developed Internet technologies and with a well-thought-out approach, it is really possible to independently plan, book and make a trip to almost anywhere in the world. You can turn to professionals in their field, who will greatly simplify this task. Vouchers to Hawaii are formed by such tour operators as "Biblioglobus", UNEX, KMP-group, GTV-group and some others.

Simplified booking systems allow you to independently determine the route and its dates, choose a hotel. On the island of Maui, for example, you can consider accommodation options from 5 to 2 stars.

Aloha State or Hospitality State

We all remember numerous American films where happy tourists get off the plane in colorful short-sleeved shirts, and a wreath of bright Hawaiian flowers hangs around their necks. Such a tradition really takes place in the archipelago, until now, the local population meets all those who arrived on the islands with flowers. Everyone. There are enough flowers for everyone here.

When describing this Incoming event, travel journalists note that the point here is not at all that Hawaiians live off tourists, and that it is beneficial for them to welcome a guest well. They are just like that - hospitable, sincerely hospitable, kind and cheerful. Warmth is felt in the sparkle of eyes and warm smiles. The visitor gets the feeling that in a past life he was from here, and now he just returned home.

What is the island of Maui?

Planning a paradise vacation? Then you need to go to Hawaii! It is not surprising that in the reviews about the island of Maui, tourists write only enthusiastic comments: "Amazing!", "Amazing!", "Amazing!" It harmoniously combines a secluded beach holiday with water activities (diving, surfing, etc.), quiet walks and difficult mountain climbs, night club life and quiet, calm hours in a fashionable hotel.

The island with an area of more than 1800 km 2 is divided into de parts: the western (smaller) and eastern (the kingdom of the Haleakala volcano). The most popular holiday destinations are the following: Lahaina, Kihei, Wailea, Kaanapali, Kahului, Waikuku. We will tell about them below.

Maui - VIP vacation (dispelling the myths)

The average Russian becomes a little uncomfortable with the amount exceeding $ 3,500. Usually, tour operators indicate in a note that this is the cost of the tour without air travel, that you need to pay extra for a visa, meals, some excursions, hotel fees. It turns out an astronomical waste that only very wealthy people can afford. Can it be reduced? Let's try.

1. Visa costs $200 (round up).

2. If you book a round-trip air flight (for example, several months in advance) from Moscow to Honolulu, you can meet $550.

3. Local flight in the state of Hawaii (Honolulu-Kahului and back) costs about $150.

4. The most budget accommodation options can be found on the east coast of the island. The minimum price per day starts from $350. If you book a room several months in advance, the discount will be up to 51%. It turns out $ 200 per day (round up).

5. No more than $200 per day is spent on food, entertainment and excursions (according to experienced travelers). Where to eat and how to have fun.

Total: you can spend $ 2900 on an independent tour lasting 5 days 6 nights. No surcharges or overpayments. Let's translate into the currency familiar to us and get about 175,000 rubles. If we take into account the fact that we buy air tickets, a hotel room at different times, a good installment plan will come out.

We pack the suitcase correctly, or the climatic features of the island of Maui

We pack swimwear, tanning products and all other attributes of a beach holiday. It is important to consider that at an altitude of 3000 m above sea level (if you go on an excursion to the craters of volcanoes) it is very cold and the strongest wind blows. You will need warm jackets and be sure to wear sombrero-type hats (so that they do not fly off your head).

The island of Maui is tropical, so even on the coldest winter days the temperature does not fall below +17 0 C. The rest of the time it stays within + 23-28 0 C. The beach season can last here all year round, but the months from May are considered the dry period to October.

Where can you stay here?

Hotels of various price categories are located on the coasts, you can rent a villa or rent a corner from the locals (if you know Hawaiian). To choose a place to your taste, consider the popular areas of Maui.

Laykhana was once the capital of the archipelago, a major whaling center. Today, there is a historical center with national attractions, as well as good surfing and diving centers. Satisfied with life, tourists ride horses through tropical gardens and inhale the aromas of hibiscus.

Kihei is a very romantic place where newlyweds from all over the world love to come for their honeymoon. Wailea is famous for its golf courses and good shopping.

Kaanapali has a huge beach with developed infrastructure. Here they go kayaking, and in the evenings they organize Hawaiian parties with incendiary hula dances.

There are many markets in Kahului that sell all sorts of interesting trinkets, souvenirs, seafood and exotic fruits. You can rent a car and go to explore the picturesque surroundings, lushly overgrown with lush vegetation. If you like national parks, aquariums, want to see a real American ranch, then you need to go to Waikuk.

exotic cuisine

The main dishes of the islanders are seafood and fruits. Of course, there are restaurants here that offer international cuisine to tourists, you can find barbecue and burger restaurants. Tourists are offered various types of grilled meat and fish (beef, elk, salmon). It is worth trying the breadfruit prepared in a special way (called an ulu dish). Raw red fish is often served with tomatoes (lomilomi). It is also wrapped in large mint leaves and steamed. Delicious pork in coconut sauce.

Maui is a real fruit abundance. Pineapples grow here, wild guava, which itself falls under the feet of tourists in tropical forests, papaya, pomegranates, pamela and many, many other goodies.

The best beaches in the world

There are more than thirty of them - for every taste. You can even choose the color of the sand. But all the beaches of the island of Maui are similar in one thing: they are clean, unusually picturesque ... They are the best! These are not just words, as many experienced travelers believe.

You should definitely visit the Kanapali beach in Layhan - this is an amazingly beautiful corner that you will never forget in your life.

Excursion trips to Maui (Hawaii)

It is impossible to come to the island and not see the Haleakala volcano, which occupies a vast territory here. Climbing it along a serpentine road is an extreme occupation. It takes your breath away from the fact that you gradually drive into the clouds. At an altitude of about 3 km above sea level, there is a strange terrain resembling the planet Mars: the volcanic rock is colored red, the vegetation is almost completely absent. The view from the observation decks is breathtaking. The way back lies through a plantation of unusual flowers - Proteus.

You should definitely go to Wayoki Falls - a 400 m high waterfall. The road to this attraction of the island of Maui goes through a tropical rainforest, where you can see the real Hawaiian nature with your own eyes.

One of the most stunning sights to see is the Whale Festival. This is the conventional name for a natural phenomenon during which thousands of these amazing huge creatures gather to spawn around the coast of the islands. Whales gracefully jump out of the water, start up fountains. Eyewitnesses say that the picture is fascinating. The main characters of the festival sail to the Hawaiian archipelago from November to May.

When a dream becomes reality...

Once you have a realistic goal in mind, start moving towards it little by little. Think: everything is real, even the cherished ticket to Hawaii! Holidays on the island of Maui are a real fairy tale when you open your eyes, close them, and still do not believe that you are here. Why not?!

So now I can tell you how these islands are similar, how they differ and what you need to know when planning a vacation. How much to fly to Hawaii and the Maldives, how much such a trip will cost and who is suitable for a holiday on bounty islands or volcanic tropical islands. I will also help you understand how best to choose an island and a hotel in all the variety of proposals. Well, for now, let's take a virtual trip to such remote and exotic places as the Maldives and Hawaii.

To begin with, both the Maldives and Hawaii can be called dream places, where you should definitely visit at least once in your life. One way or another, we are all familiar with these tropical ones. Pictures from the Maldives, which many have seen in magazines or advertisements, do not lie. This is exactly the classic image of paradise on earth: turquoise sea water, pleasant white sand, a palm tree leaning over the beach, in a word - a bounty!

The beaches in the Maldives are the best in the world!

And mysterious Hawaii you could see more than once in the TV series "Lost" ( Lost). After all, they were the location for filming many episodes and scenes. This lush tropical vegetation, mountains, volcanoes and, of course, a great variety of beaches suitable for swimming and sunbathing, as well as for surfing and other water sports, simply could not leave you indifferent.

If you have already decided exactly what you want to go to Hawaii, and you need to choose an island and a beach, then I advise you to read my article on how to combine with a lot of practical information.

It is important to know:

  • A beach holiday will not disappoint you if you choose Hawaii (for example, a 5* hotel The Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki Beach) or a luxury resort Four Seasons in the Maldives. It is beautiful in both resorts. And the decisive influence on your choice will be what you like to do in your free time from sunbathing.

So, let's start comparing the Maldives and Hawaii!

1. What are these countries and features of recreation in them

  • Many tourists do not realize until they start choosing a place to stay that Maldives- This is an independent island state, consisting of a huge number of islands: inhabited by local residents with, completely turned into hotels-resorts of the island, as well as uninhabited islands. In total, the state includes about 1200 islands, grouped into atolls. Read more.
  • Hawaii but it is a large archipelago, consisting of seven large islands and some smaller ones. All of them belong to the USA and are a separate state. Americans prefer to relax in Hawaii in a rich way, so they plan a trip there on vacation at least a year in advance. Tourists from all over the world also come to Hawaii to enjoy its unique natural beauty and charm. It is considered very prestigious to visit there, and therefore the best Hawaiian hotels in the high season are no cheaper than.

2. Do I need a visa

  • To visit the Maldives, citizens of almost all countries of the world do not need a visa at all. Upon arrival, they put a stamp allowing you to rest in the country for no more than 30 days. It is quite possible to extend your vacation for some more time. How to do this, read in, which considers in detail all visa situations when visiting the Maldives.
  • To visit Hawaii, you need a valid US visa. You can stay in America on a tourist visa for up to 6 months, but this is fraught with subsequent questions at the border at the next entry and when obtaining new visas. In any case, no matter how long your vacation is, an ordinary American visa is enough for you, which is better to do in advance a few months before your trip to America.

3. Location and where is on the map

  • The Maldives are located almost at the equator in the Indian Ocean, not far from India and Sri Lanka. Read more.
  • Hawaii is located in the North Pacific Ocean off the west coast of the United States.

3. How long to fly and how to get there

  • There are direct Aeroflot flights from Moscow to the Maldives. lasts 9 hours. You can also fly with transfers, which will also be approximately 12-15 hours, taking into account the time for transfers in Arab countries, Sri Lanka or Europe. The main airport of the Maldives is located on a separate island of Hulule, 2 kilometers from the capital Male.
  • There are no direct flights from Russia to Hawaii. From the European part of the country, it is easier to fly through major US cities - New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle, Los Angeles and others. And from the east of Russia, you can fly to Hawaii via Korea. Most of the planes arrive on the island of Oahu and the city of Honolulu. However, there are direct flights from the US to other islands - Maui, the Big Island. Read more about the flight, which lasts 12 hours. From Los Angeles or any other US city in the west, it takes about 6 hours to fly to Honolulu.

Male is the capital of the Republic of Maldives

4. When to go

  • during the winter months: December to April. This is the time of the Christmas and New Year holidays, Valentine's Day and gender holidays on February 23 and March 8. At other times, the southwest wet monsoon reigns here. Read the detailed article:
  • And it is best to go to Hawaii in the summer - from June to September. Keep in mind that in America this is the time of mass vacations, so look for cheap flights in advance on the website Aviasales.

5. Features of culture

  • The Maldives is a Muslim country in which all tourists are allowed to relax as they are used to only on the territory of resorts. Being outside of them is a must. For example, vacationers on inexpensive island villages (for example, on) are extremely upset by the dry law in the Maldives. However, this does not apply to tourists in resorts, because there you can walk in a bikini.
  • The Hawaiian Islands, although part of the United States, are proud of their local Polynesian culture. Hula dances, the gentle ukulele giant singer Israel and his unforgettable voice, the ancient belief in the volcano goddess Pele - all this is not forgotten and intertwined with modernity. Watching evening shows and dancing is extremely interesting. and if you like outdoor activities, then do not forget that to travel around the island it is better to immediately rent a car at the airport, having previously booked on the website rentalcars.

Developed infrastructure of Hawaii

6. Prices

  • Which is more expensive - Hawaii or the Maldives? The answer depends on the choice of island. There are excellent islands in the Maldives with very low prices, where the average the cost of one day of rest for two is about 200-300 dollars(eg, Kurumba and baros). distant islands like a hotel Four Seasons they are much more expensive, but the comfort and service there are simply prohibitive-cosmic. The total cost of a holiday in the Maldives consists of the price of air tickets, hotel accommodation, meals in restaurants, excursions, additional services such as massage and spa, as well as transfer to the hotel. Prices for a boat, seaplane or domestic flight vary widely. To simplify, I’ll say that a week of budget holidays in the Maldives with a flight will cost about $1500-2000 , and for a week and a half in the resort "" you will have to pay at least $3500 . luxury worth $5000-10000 .
  • In Hawaii, things are different. A fairly expensive flight to Honolulu or other islands and serious prices for decent hotels will definitely say that a luxury vacation in Hawaii will be a little more expensive, because prices for a double room start from $250-300 per day if booked in advance (look for an example of good 5-star hotels Halekulani or The Royal Hawaiian on the island of Oahu). Like an average hotel Hilton Garden Inn can also be found for $150 but don't expect luxury service there. Therefore, if we talk about an inexpensive way to relax in Hawaii, you will have to sacrifice the quality of services and the comfort of living.

7. What money to take with you and how much

  • The official currency of the Maldives is rufiyaa. However, in the Maldives, as in Cambodia, two currencies are in use: local rufiyaas, as well as U.S. dollars. Tourists can easily pay for all services in dollars, both in cash and by credit card. In the capital, you can pay in dollars everywhere, and get local currency at the normal rate for change. Almost no one pays in cash, and the general bill is usually issued at the end of the holiday, which is easier to pay with your credit card. Therefore, on a trip to the Maldives, in addition to the money on the card account, take a minimum of cash to pay for souvenirs and all sorts of small expenses, a few hundred US dollars will be enough. Read more about money and prices in the Maldives.
  • You must bring cash to Hawaii U.S. dollars for petty expenses and a bank card (preferably a dollar one). You can pay with cash in cafes and restaurants, but in taxis they accept payment only with a card. Hotels also don't like to accept large amounts of cash, so a credit card will definitely come in handy, including for renting a car. Read about features and prices, as well as how to pay a tip.

8. Things to do while on vacation

There is another very important difference between the giants of beach tourism, the Maldives and Hawaii.

  • People go to the Maldives mainly for two reasons: to relax on the beach, along the coast or go diving. The small size of the island-hotel and the relaxed atmosphere plunge you into a sweet slumber, and you just want to relax in the Maldives. And sometimes have fun, try yourself in various water sports, ride a boat, go to a desert island for a picnic,. It's still relaxing. And only experienced divers really strain in the Maldives. But deserves it! Read more.
  • And in Hawaii, you can not only fully explore the island you are flying to, but if you wish, you can also fly to neighboring islands! Although tourists usually do not have enough time for this. I really wanted to go to Maui, but I didn’t even have time to see all the most interesting things that it offers. Here you can go trekking to an extinct volcano, see waterfalls, rent a car and ride around the island in search of great beaches, ride a wave on a surf. And also visit military museums (Pearl Harbor),. Nightlife is also very rich - clubs and concerts. In general, Hawaii is more suitable for lovers of outdoor activities, which can be successfully combined with a visit to the beaches.

9. Shopping

  • There is no special shopping in the Maldives, you can only talk about relaxation.
  • Shopping in Hawaii is just great! I bought here clothes of world brands, excellent souvenirs for gifts and local sweets.

10. Attractions

  • We can say that the best attractions in the Maldives are the paradise islands themselves! This is exactly what everyone comes here for. There is no such atmosphere anywhere else in the world.
  • But in Hawaii there are a lot of attractions - both natural, cultural and man-made.

The Hawaiian archipelago, located in the central Pacific Ocean, consists of 162 islands, only seven of which are inhabited. The islands have fantastic nature - palm trees and tropical flowers, wide beaches and stable fine weather.

The Hawaiian Islands first appeared on the world map under the name of the Sandwich Islands at the end of the 18th century. They were discovered by the great navigator James Cook. Americans settled here from the beginning of the 19th century, and by 1850 they had established the cultivation of sugar cane. At the same time, Honolulu became the capital of the Hawaiian Islands. In the years 1870-1880, the situation escalated more than once and more and more often there were demands for the annexation of the islands. In the early 1890s, a revolution broke out in Hawaii, and after the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani, a provisional government was formed, which in February 1893 offered to sign an annexation treaty. However, the Senate and President Cleveland rejected the proposal. In 1894, Hawaii was proclaimed a republic, recognized by the United States. In 1897, the annexation treaty was again submitted to the Senate for consideration and was again rejected. However, at the height of the Spanish-American War, Congress passed a joint resolution of both chambers on the annexation of the islands, and in 1959 Hawaii received the status of the 50th US state.

Usually payment for the rental is made by credit card, but if you book a car when purchasing a tour, then upon receipt of it, you can pay in cash, leaving a refundable deposit of about $ 200 per week and presenting an international air ticket. Together with the car, the tourist will receive a detailed road map. Failure to follow one of the rules can cost a driver's license.

Taxis are usually ordered by phone or taken from the hotel, it can be stopped by hand, but, giving preference to this type of transport, one must keep in mind that this is quite an expensive pleasure.

The population of the Hawaiian Islands is 1.1 million people. Hawaiians make up about 2% of the population. Hawaiians, like many islanders, have never been inclined to hard work. Therefore, in the 19th century, when sugar cane began to be cultivated on the islands, the government was forced to import Japanese and Chinese workers to work on the plantations. Therefore, now the Japanese and Chinese, as well as visitors from the mainland of the United States, make up the bulk of the population of the islands.

Language: The official language is English. It is mainly used by the inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands to communicate with each other. And the language of the indigenous people - Hawaiian - exists, in general, for the exotic. They love it, teach it in colleges, tell tourists about it, but in everyday life they use only a few words, and then very rarely.

KITCHEN

All those who have visited the islands pay tribute to the Hawaiian cuisine. Hawaiian cuisine is famous for its seafood dishes. "Lomilomi" from chopped raw salmon, "laulau" - steamed fish or pork, "opacapa" from pink snapper - all these are integral parts of the local menu. Spicy lovers will love the Hawaiian red onion. You can try a pig baked according to local custom in an earthen pit. The process of eating such a pig usually takes place at sunset and is accompanied by some kind of show - the national hula dance or fire tricks popular in Polynesia. All together is called "Luau". Not the last place here is occupied by tropical fruits. Here they will offer both "banal" banana-oranges, as well as star fruit with a floral taste and a "passion fruit" similar to a small watermelon - "Passion fruit". Very good local cocktails "mai-tai", "Lover" s flower ". They exist both in alcoholic form and in non-alcoholic form.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when people talk about the Hawaiian Islands? An ocean lapping at golden sandy beaches surrounded by palm trees swaying in the wind? Of course! Hawaii is one of the best beaches in the world, an island paradise made for sunbathing, daiquiri sipping and surfing... But what about people who don't like beaches? (Scorching sun, salt in your hair and sand everywhere!) If you don't like the beaches, it doesn't matter: there are plenty of opportunities for recreation, and you don't have to go to the beaches. Here are some options...

Hawaii (Big Island)

mauna kea

The height of this dormant volcano is 4205m above sea level, it is the highest point in the Hawaiian Islands. There is a great view here, so it is not surprising that there are many astronomical telescopes on the snowy peaks. Experienced climbers can climb up to 20 km, enjoying the ethereal landscape of conical lava formations and ancient archaeological sites.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

If you want to see an active volcano, head southwest to the unique national park where the world's most active volcano Kilauea, continuously spewing lava. Outside the park, depending on the weather, you can watch the molten lava flow into the sea (making the Big Island bigger and bigger year after year). Even if Pele, the goddess of volcanoes, does not want to cooperate, the park has many interesting sights: solidified lava formations, smoking craters, and a rainforest. Rangers offer various excursions and other types of recreation.

Maui and Haleakala National Park

Over the past two centuries, Maui's tribes of agriculture and livestock have significantly altered the volcanic soil and steep grasslands of Mount Haleakala, and the spirit of the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) is still strongly felt in towns like rural Makawao. Driving up the steep slopes of the Kula region takes you back to the days of castles and ranches, vineyards with basement shops, goat dairies and huge lavender farms (with cafes and a gift shop where food or cosmetics is anything you can imagine or even think about , - made from lavender).

If you continue the trip, you can get on a winding and windswept road leading to the top of Mount Haleakala, whose height is 3055m. From there, you can see surreal, moon-like landscapes with unique flora, such as a volcano flower that has been blooming for 10 years. It can only be found here, you can look down at the clouds that fill the unusual craters of volcanoes. If you can get up early or stay up late, be sure to reserve a spot on the tour to catch the magnificent sunrise from the top; you can take a bicycle with you, it will not be easy to climb to the top, but you can just roll down.

This colorful city was the whaling capital of the Pacific Ocean, ships came here to pick up cargo and crew, and just relax for a bit. The dance clubs, bars and brothels that used to make whalers happy have been replaced by Maui's finest restaurants, art galleries that host free "art nights" every Friday with live music bars ranging from traditional Irish to jazz and, of course, souvenir shops (it's Hawaii). Despite this, the seafaring traditions of Lahaina have not been forgotten, and many excursions are held here, during which you can admire the whales.

A conical peak of hardened volcanic lava encloses Waikiki, a suburb of Honolulu on the south coast of Oahu, home to famous beaches and numerous hotels. It will take an hour or less to get to the top, the paved road stretches for 1.3 km, at around 232m there is a magnificent view of Waikiki.

Battleship Arizona Memorial

The tragic events of December 7, 1941 are immortalized at Pearl Harbor, near Honolulu. The battleship "Arizona" is located in the same place where it sank, becoming the grave for thousands of American sailors who died during the attack by Japanese troops. The memorial was opened in 1962. It is located above the sunken ship, the remains of the battleship are visible in shallow water; the names of the heroic victims are engraved on the marble wall inside. A visit to Pearl Harbor will leave an indelible impression and a reminder of the historical events that took place here.

The island of Kauai. Waimea Canyon

The giant chasm in the heart of Kauai is one of nature's wonders, with red and black striped volcanic stone walls contrasting with the lush green forests that cover the summit, making for a breathtaking sight. The name comes from the Waimea River, which flows in the lower part. The canyon was formed as a result of erosion and partial collapse of one of the walls of the volcano. Waimea Canyon State Park offers beautiful views of the Na Pali Hills, plenty of hiking through and around the canyon, and desert lovers will definitely enjoy it.

Helicopter flight over Kauai

What could be more exhilarating than flying in a helicopter over the island of Kauai, much of which is covered in forests and mountains, making it difficult to travel by land. A large number of helicopter companies (mostly located in Lihue) offer aerial tours over Mount Waialeale, dotted with waterfalls. The volcano is the central part of the island and one of the wettest places on Earth, and the sheer cliffs of Na Pali can only be reached by kayak.

Molokai. Kalaupapa National Historical Park

Hansen's disease (Lepra), or leprosy, was brought to Hawaii by strangers in 1835 and quickly spread throughout the islands. King Kamehameha V tried to stop the epidemic and ordered all infected to be sent to this remote peninsula, which protrudes from the towering sea cliffs (the highest in the world) in the northern part of the island of Molokai. This place became the last refuge of the unfortunate exiles. Approximately 40 years later, the compassionate Belgian missionary Father Damian came here for a visit and stayed in the colony for 16 years, but died contracting this disease (Father Damian was officially canonized by the Catholic Church in 2009). The Forced Isolation Act was finally repealed in 1969. Today it is inhabited by senior citizens, all former exiles. To see the village, the church named after Father Damian and the place of his burial, you need to book a tour in advance. The flight to the peninsula takes approximately 8 minutes, and can also be reached by mule along steep slopes, following a 3.2 km long zigzag route in the rocks.

04:23pm - Hawaiian adventure or how I liked it in Hawaii. Part 1. about. Oahu

For some reason, I wanted to start my first post with Hawaii. Probably because they made a very strong impression on me. Before I got there, I watched the series “Hawaii 5-0” for several months. Each episode I dreamed and imagined how one day I would be there and be like Kona (who watched the series will understand who it is) surfing on Waikiki beach (the most famous beach in the Hawaiian Islands) and walking on warm evenings in the evening Honolulu. And finally, this day has come.
I flew to Hawaii from the States. Before that, I had already stayed there for a couple of weeks in San Francisco. There are quite a few well-known airlines flying to Hawaii from the states, such as Delta, US Airways, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, the last ones I flew. It is not so close to fly from San Francisco to Hawaii - almost 5 hours 30 minutes + the time difference with SF is - 3 hours. Changing time zones for me was truly a real stress. First, upon arrival in Northern Fleet from Belarus (in Minsk, 10 hours more than in Northern Fleet), and then in Hawaii minus 3 hours from Northern Fleet time. The first week I fell asleep at a strange time and woke up at an equally strange time of day. Then I got used to it...

The island of Oahu became the first point in the Hawaiian trip.

In general, Hawaii is an archipelago consisting of 24 islands and many other small islands and is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Also, Hawaii is the 50th state of the USA (there are only 50 states in the USA).

The most famous 6 Hawaiian Islands are:

Oahu (Oahu): the capital of Hawaii-Honolulu and the famous Waikiki beach are located here, most tourists come here.

Kaua "i (Kauai): the oldest and most picturesque island, all covered with greenery, absolutely all because of the large amount of rainfall that falls all year round.

Big Island (Big Island) or as it is also called simply Hawaii: the largest island of the archipelago with active volcanoes.

Maui (Maui): the second largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago with good spots for windsurfers.

Moloka "i (Molokai) and Lana "i (Lanai)- the least popular islands among tourists, Lanai is only more or less known for the pineapple plantations that occupied most of the island in the past.

I have only visited two: Oahu and Kauai.

I flew from San Francisco in the morning to Honolulu. The weather was suspiciously cloudy. In my mind, upon arrival, I should have plunged into the eternal sun and the incredible heat that I love so much. With the heat, everything went according to plan, but the sun seemed to get tired of shining all year round and decided to take a time out.

I took a taxi and drove to the hotel to drop off my bags and run for a surfboard rental on the famous Waikiki beach. In Hawaii, as elsewhere in the States, everything is expensive. 5-7 km from the airport to the hotel by taxi cost about $ 30. I didn't like Honolulu. Too crowded, a lot of noise, and besides Waikiki beach, clouds of boutiques on both sides of Waikiki Street, restaurants and tall hotels, there is nothing.

When you get to Waikiki, you understand that the density of human bodies per sq. a meter of sand resembles something very similar to the Crimea. People everywhere, in 32 degrees, they're all craving a chocolate tan. Apparently, they want to become like the locals.

On the streets of Honolulu you can meet many young people, as well as the Japanese, who go shopping, buying up everything in their path "like it's the last time." By the way, 54.8% of the population in Hawaii are Asians, of which as many as 19.9% are Japanese. I don't like this kind of vacation. With crowds of people and shops, none of which I went into. Although I’m lying, I only bought rubber slippers. In general, on almost all trips, a friend taught me to travel only with a backpack, in which I have the most necessary things. Really convenient, and if you suddenly need something, you can always buy on the spot.

Waikiki Street, like Waikiki Beach, is very popular among tourists (for lack of anything else), here you can even get to the performances that locals arrange for tourists for free, so that they can feel the spirit of Hawaiian culture.

I happened to see one of these on the first day. Hawaiian women and children sang, danced traditional Hawaiian hula dances, trying in every possible way to set tourists in a positive way.

In addition to hotels and boutiques, there is a monument on Waikiki Street Duke Kahanamoku(full name sounds like this: Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku, Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku).

Here he is considered the "father" of surfing. In general, he was a swimmer, an Olympic champion, and during his trips to competitions around the world, he actively promoted such a type of physical activity as surfing.

In addition to the monument, there is even a cafe named after him. To have a bite to eat there had to wait in line for 20-30 minutes. Everyone wants to taste ordinary food at a cafe called Duke's.

On the very first day, I had to understand what was happening with surfing, since a trip to Hawaii meant a good surf spot where I could continue my acquaintance with the board and the ocean (the first acquaintance took place in Indonesia in Bali).

People in the water with boards darkness. Some with a surfboard, some with a paddle board (a paddle board is also a board, but a little more than a surfboard, an oar is attached to it, so you stand and row aimlessly). All the "surfers" are waiting for something, the waves, apparently, which I never caught. They were, but very weak.

You can rent a surfboard or paddle board right at the entrance to the beach. Here, even on the beach, credit cards are accepted for payment! An hour of renting a surfboard costs $ 10, but even if you pay for 2 hours and sit for 3, local good people don’t charge money for extra time, I don’t know why. It happened to me more than once.

The next day the situation with the waves was the same. Apparently, summer at the end of June is not quite the season for surfing, although everyone said that in Hawaii the season for surfing lasts all year round. Some people managed to catch a wave, I didn’t. And there is a reef under my feet and I have a panic fear of falling and peeling something off myself (in Bali, I peeled off everything I could just on the sand when I was thrown off the board, and then the reef, so continue our acquaintance).

It looks like this is not a woman's business - surfing :)

Therefore, it was decided to rent a car and go for a drive around the island, look around as they say. Car rental points in hotels are everywhere, behind the hotels on the corners there are locals who can also rent cheaper. Because on some hertz.com it’s also better book in advance, on the day when I needed the car, the prices were such that you could cry. As a result, I managed to grab such a beauty from the locals.

A convertible in Hawaii is an indispensable thing! You can just ride around the island and watch beautiful landscapes from the car. It is worth considering that if the sun is shining, then it is so powerful that even moving in a convertible with a breeze from one point to another, it’s easier than ever to earn sunstroke and burnt shoulders. So it was the same with me. For some reason, since childhood, I have been ignoring all kinds of oils, creams, etc., which I regret very much later ..

Surprisingly, the rainbow is depicted on the license plates. But it's not easy!
Hawaii is also called the Rainbow State (Rainbow State), since the rainbow here is a common sight and can be seen very often.

To be honest, after Honolulu, I thought that nothing good was waiting for me here anymore, but I was genuinely surprised when I drove 10 km from the city.
The ideal option to see the whole island is to rent a car or a moped (for lovers of the breeze). Unfortunately, I only managed to ride around the southeastern part of Oahu.
Completely different, different world. You only see people in passing cars or local merchants at the side of the road. You can breathe a sigh of relief.

The weather changed many times, from sun to rain and back again. The rains here are absolutely not terrible, I poured water for five minutes and calmed down, although the weather does not look very friendly.

Hanauma Nature Preserve Park and Hanauma Bay Beach are 25 minutes east of Honolulu. The beach is considered the most beautiful on the island and is completely hidden from human eyes. It is located in a quiet enclosed bay and is ideal for a beach holiday, swimming and snorkeling. here are the largest coral reefs in Hawaii.

I didn’t go down to the beach itself, since all the parking spaces near the park were occupied and the local old-timers didn’t even allow me to enter, and just to look at the beach from above, I had to leave the car by the road and walk.

During my entire stay in Hawaii, I had a feeling of inner calm and tranquility (with the exception of Honolulu). It seems that a person really depends on nature and, being in Hawaii, one can easily find harmony and energy, which is so often lacking in everyday life.

Driving around the island, it is impossible not to notice the numerous Shrimp stations (usually an old van converted into a kitchen where they cook several types of shrimp: with butter, garlic, coconut, chili sauce and just the original).
Not to stop and not to try is a sin.
There are entire shrimp farms on Oahu.
I took, as I was told, the most popular - with garlic. For the rest of the time, this became my favorite dish, since Hawaiian cuisine itself is unremarkable, but I had to eat something.

Here, at Shrimp Station, you can cool off and wash down everything you eat with coconut juice.

Mmm .. Nyamka! I liked it very much.

And to completely freeze, you can try the traditional Hawaiian ice cream, which is called Shave Ice. In fact, this is just crushed ice, poured with syrups of different flavors. There are various fruit flavors to choose from.
Not that tasty, but you can take a picture :)

There are many good, beautiful beaches on Oahu, but in my opinion, Hawaii is far from
beach vacation. Here you have to drive, walk, climb mountain paths and watch. But if time permits, you can lie on the beach for a day or two.

Everything is great in Hawaii. Sunrises and sunsets are so romantic and picturesque that just such a sunset makes you want to get married in Hawaii.

and live your whole life in one of the rural Hawaiian houses, which for some reason bite very much in price.

Some kind of wooden hut in an incomprehensible place like this will cost $ 300,000.

A domino on the ocean and does from $ 1 million.

In total, I spent three days on Oahu and Honolulu. This was enough for me to ride around one part of the island and understand whether I want to stay here or whether it is worth going to see some other island.

On the fourth day, it was decided to move to Kauai - the most picturesque Hawaiian island.

Read about it in the next post:
